What to Pack for a Louisiana Riverfront Getaway

A Velvet Cove weekend tends to move between a few very different settings — the rooftop pool, a humid riverfront walk, an air-conditioned gaming floor, and a dressier dinner at the chophouse. Packing for all four is easier than it sounds if you plan around layers rather than a single outfit per day.

For the Gaming Floor

There's no strict dress code on the floor, but resort casual reads best — collared shirts and dark jeans or slacks for most guests. It runs cool indoors, so a light layer is worth having even if you were sweating on the boardwalk an hour earlier.

For the Pool Deck

Bring more sunscreen than you think you'll need — the rooftop deck has limited natural shade outside the pergola section. A cover-up or light shirt makes the walk back through the lobby more comfortable, since the pool deck connects through public hallways rather than a private elevator.

For the Cove Deck

No dress code here either, but the room leans a touch dressier than a typical bar on weekend nights. Something you'd wear to a nice dinner works fine — nobody needs a suit, but flip-flops and beachwear look out of place after dark.

For the District

Shreveport's riverfront boardwalk is flat and walkable, but Louisiana summers are humid enough that a ten-minute walk can leave you needing a change of clothes. Pack at least one breathable, lightweight outfit if you're visiting between May and September, along with comfortable walking shoes rather than sandals for longer stretches on uneven older sidewalks downtown.

Pack for four different rooms, not one trip — the resort moves between them more than a typical hotel stay does.

A Few Things Easy to Forget

  • A valid government-issued photo ID — required at the gaming floor entrance, no exceptions
  • A light jacket or sweater for the resort's indoor air conditioning
  • Reef-safe sunscreen for the rooftop pool deck
  • Comfortable shoes for the riverfront boardwalk
