The Best Time to Visit Shreveport & the Red River

Shreveport doesn't have a true off-season the way some resort towns do — the gaming floor and the dining rooms run year-round regardless of weather — but the experience of the riverfront itself changes a lot depending on when you visit.

Spring (March – May)

This is arguably the best window for the pool deck and the outdoor courtyard terrace. Temperatures sit comfortably in the 60s and 70s, humidity hasn't set in yet, and the riverfront boardwalk is at its most pleasant for a walk before dinner. It's also a popular wedding season, so if you're planning an event at the resort, book the River Ballroom or terrace well ahead.

Summer (June – August)

Hot and humid, with afternoon highs regularly in the 90s. This is when the rooftop pool and cabanas earn their keep — plan pool time for morning or late afternoon and expect to spend the hottest hours indoors, whether that's the gaming floor, the spa, or one of the dining rooms. Summer also tends to bring slightly lower midweek room rates, since Shreveport's summer tourism leans more toward weekend visitors.

Fall (September – November)

Fall is a quieter, more comfortable stretch — cooler evenings, fewer weather surprises, and a steady run of Cove Deck programming as the music calendar picks back up after summer. Louisiana State Fair season in nearby Shreveport also draws visitors in late October, which can push weekend rates up during that specific window.

Winter (December – February)

Mild by most standards, with occasional cold snaps but rarely anything approaching a hard freeze. The pool deck runs weekends-only with heated water during this stretch, but everything indoors — the gaming floor, the chophouse, the spa — operates at full capacity. Winter tends to have the most flexible room rates outside of major holiday weekends.

There's no wrong season to visit Velvet Cove — just a different resort depending on which one you pick.

Our Recommendation

If the pool deck and the riverfront walk matter most to your trip, aim for spring or early fall. If your priority is the gaming floor, the Cove Deck, and the dining rooms, the resort runs at full strength every month of the year and rates tend to be most flexible in January, February, and midweek in the summer.
